Old Artist, New Trick – Off Camera Flash

Like many artistic style wedding photographers I know I excel at available light photography. From getting ready, to ceremonies to portraits; I can see the light and I know how to work with it. If I had a weakness I would say it was using flash in very dark venues.  There were instances where available light and flash were very “flat”. I knew some photographers were using multiple remote flashes in the reception and it looked beautiful. As an artist though I thought it was just too technical and would take away from me reacting in the “moment”. Well in 2013 I decided to give it a try. I am so proud. Yes, you can teach an artist new tricks! We can perfect remote flash! I’ve been photographing weddings since 1999 and it goes to show there is always something to learn. The most important trick is knowing when to shut the flash off. The final 2 images are flash off. I’m so happy as I feel I’ve gained more control over those big dark ballrooms. Now, what will I learn in 2014.

Knowing when to shut the flash off is probably the most important trick!
